  • Top Nine Movie Songs

    Not in any particular order...

Two from An American Tail, staring Fivel:

    1.  There are No Cats in America
But there are no cats in America
And the streets are paved with cheese
As much as I love cats, this song is so genius and hopeful.

    2.  Duo
    We're a duo, a duo
    A pair of lonely ones
Who are meant to be a two
    Oh, a duo, it's true-oh
    Wherever we go
    We're going me and you
Because it always makes me think of me and Jason and makes me smile.

The next two from Sound of Music, because it is the ultimate in movie music magic:

    3. The Sound of Music
I go to the hills when my heart is lonely
I know I will hear what I've heard before
My heart will be blessed with the sound of music
    And I'll sing once more
Certain songs take us all away and fill places in our hearts, plus who doesn't want to go to the hills where she sang this song.

    4. I am Sixteen, Going on Seventeen

    Totally unprepared am I
To face a world of men
Timid and shy and scared am I
... I will depend on you
Me, a romantic at heart, wanting always to be protected and taken care of.

    5. Falling Slowly, Glen Hansard, Once
Take this sinking boat and point it home
    We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
    You've made it now
    Falling slowly sing your melody
    I'll sing along
Who can't fall in love with this movie, this story behind the story, the Academy Award for best song, just romantic all around. Inspirational, plus just a plain beautiful song.

The next three are instrumentals, where the cinematography and scenes speak to my heart for not so obvious reasons.

    6.  Looks Like a Suicide, Dances with Wolves
John Barry is one of our time's best composers.  This song sets off the movie and the cinematography is simply one of the most beautiful things I have seen, even in the midst of a potentially tragic event.  The horse he rides is stunning.

    7. Titles, Chariots of Fire
Probably one of the most recognizable movie theme songs, this song and opening scene probably did more to solidify my love of movies than any other.

    8. It Never Entered My Mind, Miles Davis, from Runaway Bride
Ahhh Runaway Bride, one of my top 2 or 3 movies, it is only fitting that I pay homage to the movie that introduced me to Miles Davis.  I am eternally grateful.
Not to mention, his instrumental songs ARE romantic.

    9.  Puff, the Magic Dragon from Meet the Parents
Thanks to Leslie for reminding me of this great song.  I don't know if it appeared in any movies when it originally came out, but who can forget it in Meet the Parents.

  • No Puff, the Magic Dragon?

I totally agree with numbers 5 & 6 and I would also like to add 10,000 Miles by Mary Chapin Carpenter from the movie, Fly Away Home. I love when the music swells and that little girl comes flying over the ridge in that little glider with all the geese following her. It makes me cry every time.

And also the theme song at the end of Castaway by Alan Silvestri.

  • Not a bad call on Puff the Magic Dragon.  Being added soon.
Funny thing about Fly Away Home - I don't recall the music at all, but I cried from scene one in that movie - where the little geese loose there momma - all the way to the end of the movie.  Didn't even need a musical score to make me cry!!

  • Wasn't there a Puff the Magic Dragon movie? Maybe it was just on TV. That's where I first remember hearing the song.

Oh, and I am with you on John Barry too. He makes me cry.

  • falling slowly = makes me well up like a baby every time!

i would have to put FAME! on my list...it makes me want to work out for about two seconds, but instead, i just sing it at the top of my lungs.  ;)

  • I realize I'm late to this party, but I can't get this song out of my head:
So you are to me...by Eastmountainsouth
from Lucky Seven with Patrick Dempsey

  • Oh my gosh I LOVE The Sound of Music!!  I agree with both the songs you chose, and also I would add, "Climb Every Mountain".   The Mother Superior who sings that had the most incredible voice.  As many times as I've watched that movie, I still get goosebumps and tears in my eyes hearing her sing.
